In total there are more than 70 designs available for Astra. 35 of these designs are completely free to download.
73 pre-made designs are available on OceanWP, however only 13 designs are available to free users.
Design is subjective, however my personal opinion is that the quality of the designs available from Astra is slightly better than OceanWP. At the same time there is a better variety of designs on offer.

Free plugin extensions
Plugin extensions for Astra and OceanWP can be installed to add additional functionality to your website.
There are nine free extensions that are actively supported in Astra. This is less than the 12 plugins that were officially supported when I posted my Astra review earlier this year.
Four of the suggested free plugin extensions were designed specifically for Astra and three of them, Import / Export Customizer Settings, Reset Astra Customizer and Customizer Search, enhance the theme customizer.
Astra Bulk Edit can be used to modify the meta information of many posts and pages at the same time. It's something that I think most Astra users will find useful.
Although I understand the need to keep the basic version of Astra light, since these plugins add functionality to the back end of your website, I think it would be better to integrate them directly into the theme rather than requiring additional plugins to be activated.
The remaining five free plugin extensions are not specific to Astra. They are designed by Brainstorm Force, which is the developer of Astra, but the plugins have only been listed to help them promote their products.

Like Astra, I think most of the functionality of these free plugin extensions could be integrated into the main theme and turned on and off from the main theme options panel.
When it comes to free plugin extensions, neither Astra nor OceanWP wins.
Both themes promote plugins that add useful functions that should probably be integrated into the central theme. Astra at the same time promotes other plugins that they have developed that were not specifically designed for their theme.

How do the free versions compare?
The free versions of Astra and OceanWP have to be installed by everyone, including those who buy premium extensions. This is why the free versions available on WordPress.org are sometimes referred to as the "Central Version."
For many WordPress users, the major version is all they will use, given that they do not have the budget or desire to purchase premium extension updates. So how do the free versions of Astra and OceanWP compare?
As we've already seen, both WordPress themes share many of the same features, such as fast loading pages, WooCommerce support, and support for the WordPress theme customizer.
Both themes at the same time come with a selection of free pre-made designs.
I think the quality of the pre-made layouts available for both themes is excellent, although Astra seems a bit over the top to me.
From a varied point of view, Astra is without a doubt in the lead as it offers 35 free theme demos compared to the 13 free theme demos that are available with OceanWP; However, OceanWP offers you many more options within the WordPress theme customizer.
However, OceanWP lags behind Astra in some areas.
The OceanWP installation process, as an example, has to be reviewed by the developers. Currently a message is displayed after activating OceanWP indicating that Ocean Extra is a recommended plugin.

The number of options available in OceanWP's WordPress theme customization area is impressive, however the implementation of their theme demo system is mostly flawed. If you want to use a free OceanWP layout, you need to buy the required premium extensions or be content to use the layout with the missing features.
Due to these problems, I think Astra is a better option for free users.

So far we have focused on what is available in the major versions of Astra and OceanWP. These versions are free to download and therefore more likely to be used by more WordPress users.

One of the best extensions integrates dozens of additional Elementor widgets. These widgets can help you improve the appearance of your content.
OceanWP works well with other drag-and-drop page builders, although it's no surprise that an Elementor plugin extension is included given that Elementor is recommended by developers during the installation process.
If we compare the premium modules and extensions available for Astra and OceanWP evenly, I think Astra Pro offers more as the plugins are more specific to Astra.
In a way it is unfair to say that Astra Pro is better, given that the Astra Pro modules take care of the lack of customization options in the free version; However, if OceanWP wins the battle for the best features and configurations, we have to give Astra Pro the lead in premium plugin extensions.

The cost of using Astra and OceanWP
Astra and OceanWP can be used completely free of charge. If you choose to use the free versions of these themes, you will not be able to access all the theme demos.
At the same time, many useful features and settings found in premium modules and extensions will be missing.
Although I can understand why so many website owners stick to the free versions of Astra and OceanWP, I would like to encourage everyone to consider the premium versions, since they are both reasonably priced.

Due to the issue with OceanWP's free theme demos requiring premium plugin extensions to work properly, I think Astra is the best free option. More thematic demos are available to you at the same time.
These reviews are invalid if you upgrade to OceanWP Core Extensions Bundle as all premium plugins and designs are unlocked.
In the same way, the free version of OceanWP offers you many more customization options than Astra. If theme customization is important to you, OceanWP may be the best theme for you.
Again, these reviews are not as relevant if you are planning to upgrade to Astra Pro, as this adds hundreds of additional layout and design options.
The truth is, for most general WordPress users, it's hard to separate Astra and OceanWP.
My recommendation is to install and test both themes thoroughly to see first-hand what these themes offer.
