Not long ago we talked about the options that existed for the notepad. Tools that were used to create text files or as code editors for developers and programmers. In this case we are going to talk about two programs that were born as a free option to the notepad in Linux and that, due to their success, have reached Windows.

These programs are called Kate and Gedit. Two almost the same programs that use different types of libraries but are equally functional and offer almost the same features.

The oldest program is called Gedit. Is a code editor that is born inside the Linux Gnome desktop, was the alternative to the notepad that used GTK libraries. Gedit enables you to save files, open multiple tabs, has a text checker, has a code checker, and we can create different code files depending on the language we want to develop.

This means that when we save a text or open a new file we can select the programming language that we are going to use, we can select between php, java, c ++, scripts, etc ... Unlike the Windows notepad, Gedit enables expanding its functions through the use of plugins and extensions that we can add. Gedit we can get it for free through the official web portal. In it we will find not only the extensions but the exe files with the installers for Windows.

Kate is a code editor born for the KDE desktop. This project looks for the same as Gedit but with Qt libraries. Today, Kate offers the same as Gedit but also supports the file explorer side view opportunity as well as a reduced view of the entire document, to navigate faster through the parts of the document. Kate is also available for Windows through your official web portal. And like Gedit, in him we will find plugins that we can install and use to generate code.

Kate and Gedit are two text editors, but today many consider them the best alternative to the code editors out there. That is why they have reached Windows and other operating systems such as macOS, and it is important to try them out. What you think?
