Surely you have heard the old man say «you cannot know where you are going until it is essential it is important that you know where you have been.
Why you should keep track of your website statistics
Analytics are a great way to see who you are visiting your site, when visit during the day (or night) and where en el mundo del que proceden.
Another important reason to use analytics is to see what your visitors are doing on your site and as su contenido está funcionando.

How to register in Google Analytics?
Signing up for Google Analytics is quick, easy, and free. You will only need a few things before you can register:
- A free Google account to use for your analysis
- A Google Analytics plugin OR acceso a su sitio web de WordPress por medio de de FTP OR a compatible theme (like Total)
The first step is click the button to register.
You will then be presented with a tracking code for your website. Copy your code to paste in your preferred Google Analytics plugin (like one of the ones we share below).
If you prefer not to use a plugin that is completely fine, some themes like the Total WordPress theme include built-in Google Analytics support. As an example, Total has a custom action field where you can paste your code directly into the WordPress dashboard (you can see more details in the documentation). Or if it's more practical (and you know what you're doing), you can paste the code into your functions.php files using the following snippet:
<?php
add_action('wp_footer', 'add_googleanalytics');
function add_googleanalytics() { ?>
// Paste your Google Analytics code from Step 4 here
<?php } ?>
The final step is go back to your Google Analytics account to save. Now you just have to wait a bit for Google to collect data from your website so you can start checking your statistics and reports.

Decidedly the biggest benefit of using the plugin is the ability to see your key metrics entirely within WordPress rather than logging into Google Analytics directly. This plugin includes several options so that you can view your Google statistics in real time from your dashboard. View many of Google's standard reports for your visitors, sessions, page views, bounce rates, and more. It's faster and lets you focus on the metrics that are really important to you, rather than having to go through a myriad of other (less important) reports.
How to interpret your Google Analytics reports
Definitely, having access to your analytics reports is useless unless you know how to use them. Some of the key reports you probably want to see are:
- Page views. One of the simplest reports that Google Analytics generates, it simply tells you how many times a page has been viewed. With this information, you can learn what is popular on your website and what you could do with a little work. This definitely doesn't tell you the whole story, and you will probably use it in conjunction with other reports.
- Traffic sources. Google Analytics can track where visitors are coming from, both on the web and in their geographic location. This metric can be key to measuring the effectiveness of marketing campaigns.
- Bounce Rate.
There are plenty of other reports to look at in Google Analytics, and this article can't even begin to cover them all! You probably want to do your own research on what's on offer and check out a helpful Google Analytics guide or two along the way.
Is there an alternative to track site statistics?
Maybe you don't want to go through all the hurdles in setting up Google Analytics, or maybe you just don't like to trust third-party websites. No problem - you can still keep track of basic website traffic statistics on your own. Check out our recent guide to Matomo Analytics to see how you can keep track of your stats on your own.
Google Analytics can be used to generate a large amount of information about your site visitors and their behavior. Having this information can help you better evaluate your site's performance and allow you to set more specific site goals.
