When would you need to temporarily disable your WordPress site?
We discuss some of the cases where disabling your site might be a good idea, but it is important to understand all of these situations. Why? Because it is feasible that you find them at some point. If you are prepared with what to expect from a website, along with the procedures to follow when things go wrong, you will have more confidence in your ability to run a WordPress site. So… when would you need to disable your website?
- If your site is hacked and you want to exclude any other threats.
- Your site is hacked and you would rather have your customers see a blank screen than the security issue.
- You would like to do regular maintenance on your website.
- You need time to develop your WordPress site, so you prefer to have your customers see a maintenance page or coming soon, rather than your half-completed website.
- You would like to focus on other endeavors, but you can return to this WordPress site. Thus, you do not want to remove it completely.
Quick method 1: install the disable site plugin
I'm not a big fan of installing multiple plugins (considering it might slow down your site or open up security vulnerabilities), but with a plugin like this you can activate it only when you need it. Then after you are done disabling your site, you can disable the plugin so it does not affect your website.
The WordPress plugin is called Disable site. It is a wonderful solution to lock down the entire interface of your WordPress site, while still giving you access to the admin area / control panel. The thing about the Disable Site plugin is that it is as basic as it comes. You can send a quick message explaining what's happening to your customers, but you shouldn't expect any tools to upload charts, collect email addresses, or link to your social media accounts.
How to temporarily disable your WordPress with the plugin
Start by installing and activating the Free plugin to deactivate WordPress site. After that, locate the Disable Site tab in your dashboard menu and click on it. This takes you to the single Disable Site configuration page. As mentioned, it's a rudimentary plugin, but it gets the job done.
Begin by selecting Yes to Activate Welcome Page. The Custom Message field is where you will write a sentence or two to explain to your visitors what is happening. At the same time you can enter the custom output HTML to be more creative and include items like media, custom text and links.
After that, you can save your settings and check your interface to make sure the plugin works properly. If you don't see that your WordPress site is disabled, you probably have to log out of your admin account.
Since this is a workaround, go back to the same settings page to disable the home page when you're ready.
Quick method 2: use your theme's under construction page
It is feasible that your WordPress theme includes a built-in page under construction option. As an example, the Total WordPress Theme features the option to design your own custom page coming soon or under construction using the Visual Composer page builder.
A continuación, navegue hasta Thematic panel> Under construction from the WordPress dashboard. From here, check the box to enable the Under Construction feature and select the page you created and then save.
To remove your build page once your website is ready for its big reveal, simply uncheck the 'enable' option and save. That's it! Total makes it extremely easy to switch back and forth as needed while running your website.
Method 3: Get fancy with a maintenance mode or plugin coming soon
The quick method described previously has its benefits (mainly it enables you to disable your site in minutes), but it is not as productive as a real maintenance mode or a next page.
But first, we should talk about the difference between a maintenance mode and a next page.
A maintenance mode page is used when you currently have a website running, but you need a quick way to inform your customers when you are completing maintenance or adjusting the website layout. Since this is a temporary page, the maintenance mode page tells search engines not to index the website in that state.
Both the maintenance and upcoming pages are suitable for temporarily disabling your WordPress site. In fact, they are probably your best option.
To get most of the features go with a maintenance mode add-on or coming soon. Although we will guide you through the extremely effective methods SeedProd Maintenance and Page Mode Coming Soon plugin, aquí hay algunos otros plugins a considerar:
Using the Coming Soon Page and SeedProd Maintenance Mode
After installation and activation, you can find the Coming Soon page and Maintenance Mode options under Settings.
The last step is to navigate to the Coming Soon tab. This is where you change items like the background color, the image, and the text color.
Ready to temporarily disable your WordPress site?
The first (easy) method we talked about is best for smaller blogs that don't have a large following. It is also not a bad method for new sites. Regardless, the true return comes from a next page. Newer sites and products get a lot more exposure from these temporary pages, despite everything, you can still make updates to your website without anyone seeing it. At the same time, a maintenance mode page is good for quick fixes.
