Fix the SSL connection error in Google Chrome: It is possible that a web portal you are trying to view uses SSL (secure socket layer) to maintain the privacy and security of the information you enter on its pages. The secure connection layer is a industry standard used by millions of websites to protect online transactions with their customers. All browsers have a list of built-in default certificates for various SSLs. Any mismatch in the certificates causes an SSL connection error in the browser.

ssl-connection-error-in-chrome-3764181

There is a default list of multiple SSL certificates in all modern browsers, including Google Chrome. The browser will go and check the SSL connection of the web portal with that list and if there is any incompatibility, it will issue an error message. The same story prevails in the SSL connection error in Google Chrome.

Reasons for the SSL connection failure:

  • Your connection is not private
  • Your connection is not private with ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID
  • Your connection is not private with NET :: ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID
  • This web page has a redirect loop or ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS
  • Your clock is late or your clock is early or Red :: ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID
  • The server has a weak and short-lived Diffie-Hellman public key or ERR_SSL_WEAK_EPHEMERAL_DH_KEY
  • This web page is not enabled or ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH

NOTE: If you're looking to fix the SSL certificate error, see How to fix the SSL certificate error in Google Chrome.

Problem related to SSL connection error in Google Chrome

Issue 1: Your connection is not private

I get the error "Your Connection is Not Private" due to the SSL error. SSL (secure sockets layer) is used by websites to keep all the information you enter on their pages private and secure. If the SSL error appears in the Google Chrome browser, it means that the Internet connection or the computer is preventing Chrome from loading the page safely and privately.

Also check, How to fix your connection is not a private error in chrome.

Topic 2: Your connection in Non-Private, with NET :: ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID

If the certificate authority of the SSL certificate for that web portal is invalid or the web portal is using a self-signed SSL certificate, then chrome will display the error as "NET :: ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID"; According to the CA / B forum rule, the certificate authority must be the member of the CA / B forum and its source will also be within chrome as a trusted CA.

To resolve this error, contact your web portal administrator and ask them to install SSL from a valid certificate authority.

Topic 3: Your connection in Non-Private, with ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID

Google Chrome displays the error "ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID" as a result of the common name that the user entered does not match the particular common name of the SSL certificate. For example, if a user tries to access www.google.com but the SSL certificate is for google.com, Chrome may display this error.

To get rid of this error, the user must enter the correct common name.

Number 4: This web page has a redirect loop or ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS

You'll see this error when Chrome stops because the page tried to redirect you too many times. Sometimes cookies can cause pages to not open correctly and redirect you too many times. this-webpage-has-a-redirect-loop-or-err_too_many_redirects-3570588

To fix the error, try clearing your cookies:

  1. Open "Settings" in Google Chrome and click on "Advanced settings".
  2. In the "Privacy" section, click on Content settings.
  3. Under "Cookies", click All cookies and site data.
  4. To remove all cookies, click Clear all and to remove a specific cookie, hover over a site and click the img_5ed4e3ab78372-8694265 that appears on the right.

Number 5: Your clock is late or your clock is fast or net :: ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID

You will see this error if the date and time on your PC or mobile device are inaccurate. To fix the error, open your device's clock and make sure the time and date are correct. Check here how to correct the date and time of your device.

Problem 6: The server has a weak ephemeral Diffie-Hellman public key (ERR_SSL_WEAK_EPHEMERAL_DH_KEY)

Google Chrome will show this error if you try to go to a web portal that has outdated security code. Chrome protects your privacy by not allowing you to connect to these sites.

If you own this web portal, please try to update your server to support ECDHE (Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman) and turn off DHE (Ephemeral Diffie-Hellman). If ECDHE is not enabled, you can disable all DHE cipher suites and use simple RSA.

diffie-hellman-3857774

Number 7: This web page is not enabled or ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH

Google Chrome will show this error if you are trying to go to a web portal that has outdated security code. Chrome protects your privacy by not allowing you to connect to these sites.

If you own this web portal, try configuring your server to use TLS 1.2 and TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_GCM_SHA256, instead of RC4. RC4 is no longer considered safe. If you cannot disable RC4, make sure other codes than RC4 are enabled.
