1. Move comments from one post to another

Or maybe one of your site visitors leaves a comment, but on the wrong post. This can easily happen if your visitors are reading a bunch of posts and they go off track somewhere. Perhaps they mixed up the information and left a comment without realizing that it should have been for another post. The comment will not be related to the post in which it appears, which will only confuse other visitors who read it.

One such tool out there that works quite well is the Tako Movable Comments plugin. With this plugin installed on your WordPress site, you will be able to move comments from one post to another, or from one page to a post, or vice versa. At the same time, you can move multiple comments at the same time, as well as move threaded comments at the same time.

All you have to do is select the type of post you want to move the comment to, then select the actual title of the post / page you want to move it to. If you want to move a large number of comments, just head over to the comments section, choose the posts you want to move, and then use the Bulk Actions drop-down selection. You can even keep your comments threaded in the correct order as they move so that the “conversation” remains intact. With a couple of clicks, you can easily move your comments without having to do it manually. It's a total time saver!

2. Disable comments on current posts

It's easy to disable comments on posts when you're in the middle of writing a new one, but what if you decide you intend to disable comments on a bunch of posts you've already written and posted? You may be tired of responding to comments, especially if they engage in a threaded conversation that constantly requires you to intervene. Perhaps the person who wrote the original post is no longer writing for you, making it impossible for any response from the author to proceed.

These types of threads definitely need constant management, as many of the comments could be very offensive. Maybe you just don't have the time or inclination to manage these comments day after day, especially when they appear on all of your posts.

You can always disable comments when you are setting up a new site just by unchecking the box in Settings> Discussion, but this is more challenging when it comes to existing sites with a lot of content. And this setting may work for posts, but it won't apply to custom post types or pages, which means the new comment form will still appear.

Whatever your reason for wanting to disable comments on a previous post, the best way to do it is with the use of a plugin. In any case. One of those useful plugins is the WP Disable comments plugin that enables you to disable plugins, pings and trackbacks for your posts, authors, categories, tags, URL paths, references, IP addresses, post formats, post types and languages. It gives you incredible control over your comments.

3. Close comments after a certain time on posts and pages

Spam is usually directed at older posts, many of which are no longer being managed by their author. Even with an anti-spam plugin, you won't always see these comments, but you will definitely notice that your site is taking longer than usual to load.

Arguably, there is no point in keeping an old post open for comment, especially if it is novel in nature and no longer relevant. You only run the risk of being spam while you have to constantly monitor the comments that continue to arrive. You can disable comments on posts after a certain amount of time has elapsed in two different ways:

  • Close comments on individual posts: Closing comments individually enables you to keep certain posts open for comments and enables you to target only specific posts. This requires a bit of manual work, but it works a lot. Just go to «Edit post» later uncheck the "Allow comments" and «Allow Trackbacks and Pingbacks» boxes.
  • Automatically: To specify a particular number of days that comments can be left open, go to Settings -> Discussion -> Other comment settings -> "automatically close comments on articles older than X days". Save these settings and you're done. It's as easy as that.

This way there you have it. A little comment tweak can go a long way in improving your site and clearing a lot of time-consuming administration off your plate. I hope these tips are helpful to you. Are there other methods to move comments or delete them in bulk that I missed?
