DNS

DNS concept

What are DNS (Domain Name Server)?

When we talk about DNS, we refer to the initials Domain Name System. It consists of a technology that uses databases to detect the IP address to which any domain that a user wants to belong belongs. That is, it takes the URL and "translates" it to provide your exact address, your IP.

For those who do not know, the IP adress is the identity of each computer in a network. When one is carried out at home, it is likely that there are computers and telephones, including consoles, connected with different names and, at the same time, different IPs that identify them; since it is a small number, memorizing them is not too complicated. Despite everything, when you extrapolate to the Internet and the hundreds of millions of connected computers, things are not so simple.

That is why DNS was born, to make this identification and detection task somewhat easier. Returning to them, it is essential to differentiate the three parts that compose them: DNS client, installed on the user's computer and in charge of asking for the “names”; DNS server, answers that request and resolves it; and Zone of authority, groups of servers whose task is to resolve specific domains (for example .com or .net).

Now that we have entered the concept, we are going to dig a little deeper into it to make it as easy as possible to understand it. Since it is a basic element of everything related to the network of networks and communication between computers, it is convenient to know it by heart, especially if you work with hostings.

What are DNS for?

As we have already explained, the main objective of DNS is to indicate which server to go to when entering a web page in a browser or in any other program or tool. Since, in fact, these are hosted in what are known as IP addresses, which also identify them, this system acts as a translator or converter, changing a URL for an IP and considerably facilitating the user experience when navigating.

DNS examples

There are many DNS, although not as many as there are IP addresses and web pages. On the Internet you can find several DNS servers that are quite popular among users, with cases like OpenDNS or even Google Public DNS. Regarding the addresses of these servers, for the first we can take 208.67.222.222 and for the second 8.8.8.8.

There are more, but these are two of the hardest workers globally and those with the best results; even though it can also be said that there are others of a professional nature that are hired through different specialized companies. NeoAttack, for example, has this service.
