If you are having difficulty with mouse zooming instead of scrolling, then you are in the right place. Please refer to the methods below to guide you how to fix this problem.

Check if the CTRL key is not locked

As it turns out, one of the most common causes that will trigger this type of behavior is a stuck CTRL key. If you didn't know when you pressed one of the CTRL keys and scrolled up or down, the mouse scroll creates a zoom. This happens in any application, including native Windows programs like File Explorer or WordPad.

You can start by verifying that the CTRL key is physically pressed. If you don't see any difference from the other keys, you should use the on-screen keyboard (OSK) to make sure the Ctrl key is pressed or not.

Several users confirmed that launching the on-screen keyboard allowed them to confirm that the Ctrl key was pressed and is at the root of this behavior.

Here's a short guide to testing a stuck Ctrl key with the on-screen keyboard:

  1. Press Windows + R to open a Run dialog box. Type 'osk' in the text box and press Enter to open the
  2. On-screen keyboard utility.
  3. Once the on-screen keyboard utility appears, you should be able to tell if it's a locked key. If you notice that both Ctrl keys are held down (highlighted in blue), it's clearly a locked key.
  4. If you confirm that the Ctrl key is locked, try releasing it by pressing it a few times. If this doesn't work, the only way to stop the annoying mouse zoom behavior is to replace the keyboard.

Check mouse settings

If you are using a version of Microsoft Windows and are having problems with the mouse wheel, adjust the mouse settings in the Mouse Properties window. You can access this window by opening Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking Mouse.

In the Mouse Properties window, select the Wheel tab and try adjusting the number of lines to scroll with the mouse, or try changing the mouse to scroll one page at a time. Once these settings have been made, click Apply and then OK. Make sure this change helps fix mouse issues.

If you are using a mouse that was not made by Microsoft, you can also customize the mouse with the provided software. As an example, Logitech mice often have separate Windows software that allows users to customize mouse settings. These programs can often be accessed by clicking the mouse icon on the system.

If the above suggestions do not solve your problem or if the mouse software is not installed on your computer, we suggest that you install the latest drivers and software for your mouse. See the Input Manufacturers section for a list of links to mouse manufacturers.

Mouse wheel issues can also be caused by corrupted system files in Windows. To fix this problem, you will usually need a Windows repair to replace the damaged system files. To avoid losing files, it is recommended that you back up your files before running Windows Repair.

Turn off the pinch zoom gesture.

Touch gestures can be a blessing and a curse. Two-finger scrolling and fingertip image manipulation is fine, but wild zooming when you don't expect it. Finding and clearing a single setting in your laptop's mouse settings can calm an overzealous touchpad.
