The Alt + 130 generates character 130 of the DOS/OEM character set (yes, DOS). Your locale is essential in this case. By default, the numeric keypad can only enter the first 256 characters to enter characters by code. If you enter the defined code for the character using the numeric keypad while holding down the Alt key, the characters that cannot be entered using the keyboard will be displayed on the screen.

However, many Windows 10 users complain that they are unable to use ALT codes on their computer. Some of the reasons for Alt codes not working in Windows 10 are due to 3rd party interference, registry corruption of some special characters, and mouse buttons not working when NumLock is enabled.

Below are some alternatives to fix the problem with old codes on your Windows 10. Try one method at a time to see which ones work on your computer.

How to fix ALT codes not working in Windows 10

Enabling input of all Unicode characters by code(*10*)

  • Open Regedit (Windows keys + R and type regedit).
  • Access this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER Control Panel Input Method

Create a string value called EnableHexNumpad with the value 1.

  • You can then enter any character by holding down the right Alt key, pressing the + key on the numeric keypad, entering the hexadecimal code, and releasing the Alt key.
  • You may need to log out and back in before this input type is enabled.

Enable mouse keys when NumLock is on.(*10*)

Several Windows users struggling to fix the same issue reported that the issue was completely resolved after going to the Mouse tab in the Ease of Use menu and enabling the "Use mouse buttons when Numlock is on" option.

  1. Press Window Key + R to open a Run dialog. Then type 'ms-settings: easyofaccess-mouse' and click Have access to open the Mouse tab in the Easy of Access menu.
  2. Once you've reached the correct menu, go to the right side of the screen and enable switching between mouse buttons to move the mouse pointer over the number pad.
  3. After doing this, you will see some additional options appear. Ignore the rest and make sure the Use only mouse buttons switch is enabled when NumLock is enabled.
  4. Once the above option is enabled, restart your computer and verify that the problem is resolved the next time you restart by trying to use the ALT codes.

Use character map to add ALT.(*10*) characters
