Are you 16 (or 17 or 18) and looking for a way to earn money? Working at 16 seems like a difficult task. But do not be discouraged it is not impossible.

For adolescents, the lack of experience or certain studies can be an impediment when looking for a job. Despite everything, despite the fact that all this does not seem hopeful at all, there are possibilities!

I also started with one of these jobs. When I was 17 I looked after some children, two brothers, throughout the summer. And I did it two summers in a row. I wasn't making a fortune, but I was very happy to earn my own money, for my expenses.

Something very important that I also learned is to manage my money so as not to spend it wildly! I'm sure we all learn lessons from our first job and when you find yours, you will too.

In this post I want to give you some ideas of where you can find a job to generate that income with which you help your family, pay for your studies or basically serve for your personal expenses.

We started ...

Earn money online if you are 16 years old or older

Earning money online is feasible, at any age. In some cases the income will not be the same as a traditional job, but it is a way of working with 16 years. At the same time, if you are studying you can combine these two tasks, in this post you will find other ideas with which you can earn extra money as a student.

Here I am going to give you 3 simple ideas:

Fill out online surveys

Earn extra money by participating in small surveys on consumer habits that you can do on your PC or on your cell phone. Survey pages are free and they usually accept people over 16 years of age.

advice: You can register on more than one survey page.

Recommendations:

For Spain 🇪🇸: Toluna and also i-Say accept users from 16 years old.

In Mexico 🇲🇽: Toluna MX and LifePoints MX

For Colombia 🇨🇴: Toluna Colombia and LifePoints Colombia

Here I leave you the complete list of the pages that I recommend.

Use applications to generate money

Most teens have a Mobile Device in their possession, and they handle it better than anyone else.

Well, if you still did not know, there are applications that allow you to earn money, just by performing small actions. Watch advertising videos, answer surveys, take photos of a store, etc.

Most apps accept users over 16 years of age and are free.

advice: If you invite your friends you also earn points, which you can later convert into money.

recommendations: I especially suggest Gift Hunter Club. You accept users from 14 years and its interface is very cool! At the same time, you have a ton of ways to earn money.

In this post you will be able to find other applications to generate money with your mobile.

Create a Youtube channel

Possibly you already know YouTube or maybe you already have an account. It is free and you can post videos with the topic you like the most. You will earn money based on the number of views of your videos.

advice: Create original, good quality videos and post frequently.

recommendations: In this post I give you some keys to generate money on YouTube.

Working at 16: Where to find a job?

Possibly you already know the typical job portals. Yes, there are hundreds of job offers, but the problem is that there are millions of candidates, and you have to "fight" against them to make yourself visible.

But I want to start by telling you about other resources that you can turn to and that maybe you did not know about.

Talk to your contacts

Turn to your contacts, friends and family. Even your parents' friends. You never know, maybe they can offer you a job opportunity or they can recommend you in their environment.

For many people it is a little delicate get a job by contacts. But I think there is nothing wrong, as long as you show that you are worth the job.

Sign up at Youth or Employment Offices

Some cities have specific offices to guide young people in training and employment. They also have plans to boost youth employment.

Sign up as interested in employment and / or training.

Start as a volunteer

Being a volunteer is a possibility to show your skills and knowledge. Even when it is not going to bring you economic income, you get other benefits: experience, contacts, and maybe when there is a vacant position they will take you into account to fill it.

Look for a seasonal job

This is a good way to start. Some companies look for new workers for specific dates of the year such as: Christmas, summer, sales, promotional campaigns, etc.

These jobs can be: shop assistants, camp monitors, waiters, kitchen assistants, etc. At the same time, the advantage is that this will be useful as an experience for your resume.

Find a job at a fast food restaurant

The places of this type of food usually have job offers for young people under 18 years old and over 16 years old.

You can even make this job compatible with other activities or your studies, since these stores have long business hours.

Other alternatives to earn money if you are 16 years old

Have you already used the above resources and still haven't found a job? Are you looking for other alternatives for income? Are you interested in starting a personal project that helps you earn money?

If you are 16 years old, or maybe older, you have alternatives to employment to earn an income. Here I am going to give you some ideas, and you will be able to check that you do not need any (or very small) investment of money to start.

Sell what you don't use

All accumulated throughout our lives useful things and others that are not so useful. Even you who are only 16 years old. I'm sure you have things that you don't use. Come on, look in your room or in your closet…. Have you seen that I'm not wrong?

What have you found? Clothes, toys, video games, ...? Sure there may be something. If they are in good condition, you can market them and thus earn extra money. You can also ask your parents to do the same in their rooms and help them market what they do not use, in return you keep a small commission.

Where to trade?

  • In second-hand stores in your neighborhood or your city.
  • On the Internet you can find several online clothing stores or second-hand objects. Here, you can find the list of the best stores to market online.

Do you need money to start?

No, you only need to clean your closet and / or your room to find what you do not use and want to market.

advice: Ask the collaboration of other members of your family to give you what they do not use instead of throwing it away.

Create crafts to market

How good are you creating original objects? They can be for decoration, clothing, accessories, etc. What you do with your own hands and with your own designs.

Perhaps you are imagining a grandmother knitting or sewing dresses. No. No matter how old you are, you can have a very good creative side that allows you to earn money. Perhaps you are one of those people who is thinking every time how to "transform" their clothes to change, and thus end up creating original designs ... or perhaps you create your own accessories and your friends love it.

Where to trade?

  • The example I gave you before, sell your friends the accessories you have made: bracelets, purses, wallets, cell phone case, pencil case, etc ...
  • Sell to your family, your neighbors, your parents' friends, etc.
  • Try to market online, there are many websites, but there is also a lot of competition. In this post you have more ideas and some websites to take a look at.

Do you need money to start?

Yes, you need some money to buy the material for your creations.

advice: You can borrow money from your parents and pay them back after your first sales. This is why it is essential to determine a price for your creations that helps you cover costs and your work time, but without going overboard.

Ok, the above ideas are not for you ...

So what if you create a job adapted to you, your tastes and your free time.

Take care of the children of your neighbors, of your parents' friends, ...

Some parents seek extra help with their young children and you could be the one to help them, and it is a way of working at 16

Perhaps your parents' friends have children; perhaps in your building or in your neighborhood there are families with small children. If you look in your environment you will find some possibility.

You can take care of children on specific occasions, for example when it is a holiday for schools but not for parents. Or something more durable like picking them up after school and taking them home every day.

Where to begin?

  • It begins in your environment: acquaintances, neighbors, relatives, ...
  • Post signs in your neighborhood, in stores, or in churches.
  • On the Internet, there are also pages specialized in finding babysitter.

Do you need money to start?

No, you don't need money.

advice: You can prepare a “kit” when you act as a babysitter with stories and games that can help you entertain the little ones, and you can do this with your toys and books.

Give private lessons

You can give support classes to children in a subject that you are very good at. Or if you prefer, you can help them with a sport or skill, for example: soccer, tennis, guitar, etc.

Where to begin?

If you have little siblings, maybe you can teach their friends. Also talk to your surroundings.

Do you need money to start?

Do not.

advice: You can combine child care with support classes. Children hang out with you while you help them with their homework and learn.

Take care of pets in your free time

More and more families have at least one pet, and when they do not have time to take care of them, they are willing to pay so that their pet is not left unattended.

Therefore, if you are good with pets, you can propose your pet sitter or petsitter services. You can take care of different tasks: walking pets, going to their house to feed them, hosting them in your house (yes, like a hotel), etc.

Where to begin?

Here I also suggest you start with your environment. You can also put your ad on pages specialized in finding petsitter. As an example: Dogbuddy or Holidog.

Do you need money to start?

No, you don't need money.

advice: If a pet has certain habits or routines, don't change them. Follow the owner's instructions.

Help your neighbours

Another way to work at 16 is helping your neighbors with tasks that are difficult for them in exchange for a small salary.

As an example: shopping, cleaning the car, going to the post office, etc.

Where to begin?

In your neighborhood or in your building.

Do you need money to start?

No, nothing.

advice: Do not cut yourself! Knock on your neighbor's door and offer your help. But do not go overboard with the price, otherwise no one will tell you yes.

What if you are under 16 and want to earn money?

If you are looking for a job, legally it is not feasible, they will not hire you.

But this does not mean that you cannot earn extra income. As an example with any of the previous ideas and on specific occasions such as: babysitting, taking care of pets or using applications on your cell phone, you can do it. Of course, the authorization of your parents is necessary. Keep in mind that these income would be in (which have not been declared to the Treasury), but being small amounts you would not have any problem (that is why I said about specific occasions).

Whatever the case, if you are under 16 and want to earn some money, talk to your parents. They will know how to advise you.

Tips for looking for a job when you are 16 years old

  • Prepare your CV. Search for models on the Internet and add only important information, do not put information that is not of interest (just to fill in).
  • Have your documents at hand, on paper and digital.
  • Practice for job interviews. Ask your family or friends to help you practice and get on your nerves.
  • Take training programs that give you advantages over other candidates. As an example: first aid, monitor, lifeguard, etc.
  • If you volunteer (and in any job), show a proposal.
  • Write down the dates of calls for camp monitor, as an example.
  • Inform your parents of the decision to work, in some cases an authorization is required.

At the same time of all these tips, you should know the working conditions if you are a minor.

Working conditions that a minor employee must have

In Spain, these are the working conditions for minors and people over 16 years of age.

  • Night work is prohibited. It is considered as night work the one that takes place between 10 at night and 6 in the morning.
  • They cannot work overtime.
  • They may not perform more than eight hours of effective work per day, including training time.
  • If the continuous daily shift exceeds four and a half hours, a period of rest during the shift of at least 30 minutes must be determined.
  • The duration of the weekly rest will be at least two uninterrupted days.
  • They will have the right to special protection for their safety and health at work.
  • They will not be able to work in certain activities declared unhealthy, painful, harmful or dangerous both for your health and for your professional or human training.

Exception for minors under 16 years of age: Minors may participate in certain public shows, alone, and prior authorization by the Labor Authority and in writing, and when these do not pose a risk to physical health or to their professional and human training.

Conclusions

We are almost done. First I want to give you my opinion.

If you are 16 years old and you are thinking of working, do not be discouraged. If you are in Spain like me, you will have seen the news and unemployment data. It is discouraging. That is why I wanted to give you some ideas so that you can visualize that there are other alternatives to a traditional job and with which you can also obtain some extra income.

I'm not going to lie to you, it's not easy to start. But this is true for everyone, it does not matter if you are 16 or 30 years old. You must set your goals and step forward towards them.

I hope you liked this post and the information here has been useful 🙂
