bbPress

You can install bbPress from your WordPress dashboard. Once you have installed and activated bbPress, visit 'Forums' in your control panel and create a new forum.

Once you have created new forums, proceed to Settings> Forums. Select options to configure the forums and allow or disallow privileges for users. BuddyPress and bbPress onboarding
Communities that you add to your blog with BuddyPress can allow members to discuss in a forum created within the community. You can have many forums within a single community network. For forums to work within community networks, you must use BuddyPress and bbPress together.
As previously mentioned, any member of any group can access the forums. To restrict access and organize the forums and communities on your blog, you need,
- Assign the forums to a core group.
- Enable bbPress to have groups.

BuddyPress and bbPress work well together and can be used independently at the same time. They can be installed in any order. And if any add-on is disabled, it won't affect the other.
Final thoughts
There are similarities between BuddyPress and bbPress, but at the same time they are differences. Both developed by Automattic and free for users. They serve as effective communication tools for user groups. The two plugins are intended to increase interaction and exchange of ideas between members. A number of plugins that extend the functions are available for both plugins, BuddyPress rather than bbPress.
But BuddyPress is more about building communities and networks, and bbPress is more about forums and discussion boards. bbPress is quite simple, BuddyPress has more features. You can use them independently - choose to have just one forum to discuss with bbPress, or a community that connects with BuddyPress. Or set up both forums and communities and make your blog truly participatory.
