Older versions of Windows, such as 7, 8, or 8.1, did not have a standard PDF viewer pre-installed. Since the release of Windows 10, users don't necessarily need to install a third-party tool to view PDF files as the PDF viewing feature is integrated with Microsoft Edge. Thus, when you install Windows 10, Microsoft Edge appears not only as the default Internet browser, but also as the default PDF viewer.

When someone clicks on a PDF file, the system automatically launches MS Edge. Unfortunately, many people have reported problems with Edge opening PDF files. Usually, this issue occurs after the installation of Windows 10 Creators Update or sometimes after regular updates.

Suppose you are trying to enter the web portal in Microsoft Edge, could you try to enter the web portal in another web browser such as Google Chrome / Internet Explorer and see if it works?

You can also try moving your mouse over the PDF file > right-clicking > and selecting Save As.

Save the file to your computer, then open it with Acrobat Reader.

Change default PDF display settings in MS Edge

To determine the default settings for PDF viewing in MS Edge, follow the steps below:

Set MS Edge as the default program to open PDF files

1. Reach for the control panel and open it.
2. On the control panel home page, select Standard Programs.
3. Select “Assign a file type or protocol to a program”.
4. Find the PDF entry and select the Edit Program option.
5. When a pop-up window appears on the screen, select the Microsoft Edge program to open the PDF file.
6. Select and check Always use this app to open.pdf.
7. Click OK to store the changes.

Check if you are using Windows 10 N or KN editions.

By default, Windows 10 N and Windows 10 KN versions do not support opening PDF files in Edge because they do not have Windows Media capabilities. According to this Microsoft page, Edge Browser cannot open PDF files without Windows Media features installed.

To check the edit, right-click this computer icon in the File Explorer navigation pane, and then click Properties.

So if you have version N or KN of Windows 10, download and install Microsoft Windows 10 Media Feature Pack.

Clear cache in Microsoft Edge

It's a good idea to clear the cache regularly to avoid web portal loading issues, unnecessary interruptions, and better performance. To delete the cache, please proceed as follows

Launch Microsoft Edge. Go to settings. Under Delete navigation, under Data, click Select what to delete.

Select the Cached data and files option and click Delete.

CONCLUSION

Most problems opening PDF files are due to one of the above causes. It is also essential to make sure that your operating system supports the PDF format. As an example, Microsoft Edge is not only the default browser in Windows 10, but also the default PDF reader. You can change this to make Reader or Acrobat your default PDF reader.
