Check your graphics card
Do you use an AMD or nVidia graphics card? Resolve works much better with AMD graphics cards when using OpenCL because AMD has a better implementation of OpenCL. nVidia has been locked into CUDA for so long that it has neglected OpenCL from the driverpoint of view. As a last step, try reinstalling your graphics card driver.
Disable built-in GPU
If you are trying to run DaVinci Resolve on a desktop/laptop setup that contains two different GPUs (dedicated and integrated), you need to ensure that DaVinci Resolve uses the dedicated option. As some users have pointed out, it is possible that the software will try to use the built-in response, which will result in serious throttling (and crashing) of the software.
You can try to force Davinci Resolve to use the dedicated GPU via the Nvidia Control Panel / AMD Catalyst Control Center, but affected users have had mixed results.
The safest option is to basically disable the built-in GPU. Therefore, your system has no choice but to use the dedicated GPU. Here is a quick guide to disabling the built-in GPU.
Note: This manual applies to all current versions of Windows.
- Press Windows + R to open a Run dialog box. Then type “devmgmt.msc” and press Access to open Device Manager.
- In Device Manager, expand the Display Adapter drop-down menu.
- From the Display Adapter drop-down menu, right-click your integrated GPU and select Disable Device.
- Open DaVinci Resolve and see if you are still experiencing frequent crashes.
Use a dedicated GPU
Resolve requires a dedicated graphics processor to run. Geforce Titan Xp or 1080 Ti would be ideal, but depending on your codecs and resolutions, smaller cards like 1070, 1060 or AMD equivalents should also work. Check the configuration instructions on the Blackmagic pages, they are very careful.
