ProfSvc (User Profile Service) is a Microsoft service that handles uploading and downloading of user profile. Sometimes ProfSvc can be disabled or crash.

As a consequence, users will not be able to connect to their user profile, applications may have problems accessing user data, and some components installed to receive notifications about profile events will not actually receive them. Some users have associated the problem with installing Windows 10.

The problem occurs when you enter your password and press Enter at the Windows login screen. Typically, the error messages “User Profile service failed to login” and “Cannot load user profile” are displayed and you return to the login screen.

Create a new Windows user profile

If you have a second Windows user account that you can log in to, you can use this account to perform the following steps to create a new user account.

Regardless, if there is no other account, start the computer in safe mode (as described below) and try the steps. If this still doesn't work, reboot into safe mode and enable the hidden administrator account.

To do this, type cmd in the Start menu search box, right-click Command Prompt in the list of results, and choose Run as administrator.

At the command prompt, type the following:

network/active user admin: yes

The solution should be: The command was executed successfully. Reboot your computer now and you should see an administrator account and your damaged account appear.

Enable the built-in administrator account.

  1. Open the high indicator by switching to safe mode with the indicator. To switch to safe mode, use the power switch on the login screen and press Shift + Restart. This will take you to the recovery boot menu. Click Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings. A list appears from which you can choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
  2. Type the following command: active/network user admin: yes and press Enter.
  3. Log in to the built-in administrator user profile and create a new user profile with administrator rights.
  4. Delete the damaged user account from the built-in administrator.
  5. Afterwards, lock the screen by pressing Windows + L and logging in to the administrator account.
  6. Check if the issue persists and you can disable the built-in administrator account by typing the command: network user admin /active: no at the command prompt (Admin).

Restoring the original ProfSvc service in Windows 10

Click Start
Enter the command prompt as an administrator.
Type the following commands in the command window:

sc config ProfSvc start = auto
sc Start ProfSvc

Press Access
Close the command window.
Restart your computer and check if the issue still occurs.
