Everything seems to be going perfect in his life inside the Winter mansion, better known as Manderley. However, the memory of the late wife will begin to cause intrigue and tension in the marriage.

The main characters of the film, Mrs. De Winter and Maxim de Winter, are played by Lily james Y Armie hammer, respectively. Lily is known for her work on Downton Abbey, The darkest hours, Baby Driver Y Cinderella. Meanwhile, Hammer gained popularity for her performance in Billy: The early years and for bringing the Winklevoss twins to life in the film The social network.

In an interview about the movie Rebecca, the director assured that the intention is to retake an emblematic story in the world of cinema and bring it closer to the new generations.

“Most of the audience of this movie probably haven't seen it (…) The book itself is the memory of a dream (…) [I am fascinated by] That kind of idea that we are struggling with today, what is true and what is real, and how do you process those things and then you have to think about where and when they came from, "he said.

The risk of this film is that it is a second adaptation of the novel of the same name by Daphne du maurier. This would not be a problem if the first production had not been by the talented Hitchcock and, at the same time, it had become one of the masterpieces of the last century. However, at the same time it is clear to us that the intention was never to overcome that feat, but to give it a more modern touch and relive a story that is unknown to the younger audience.

Peter Bradshow (The Guardian) strongly criticizes the work of Ben Wheatley, although at the same time it shows little resemblance to the novel that sustains the production.

"It's quite nice at times with all its stupidity, stridency and mannerism, and in a way it's closer to the narrative form of the original novel than it is to the Hitchcock film," he said.

In your review of VarietyPeter Debruge is more condescending after considering it positive that Wheatley did not break the memory of the 1940 film.

"If director Ben Wheatley seems like an unusual choice for a remake of Rebecca, you will be relieved that he has not ruined the previous version of Hitchcock," he said.

For his part, David Rooney (The Hollywood Reporter) at the same time considers that the film distributed by Netflix does the job entertaining audiences with a classic story. Even so, it detects some weak points that it did not want to stop mentioning.

“Uneven pacing aside, the new Rebecca is formidably visible and is by no means misunderstood. It is a beautiful production, although few of the design elements evoke the Gothic roots of the material, and some of the style options, especially in the romantic scenes that take place in Monte Carlo, seem out of place, ”he opined.

Ian Sandwell believes that it is important to note that Rebecca it has nothing to contribute to the classic of the last century and, on the other hand, represents a throwback to this applauded production.

“The Netflix adaptation is a romantic throwback to the Hollywood classic (…) Rebecca is not very successful in balancing the various genres that du Maurier's novel explores, but Wheatley cannot be accused of playing it safe. Your version of Rebecca it is not at all a remake of the 1940 version, winner of the Oscar by Alfred Hitchcock. The new Rebecca is incredibly faithful to the original novel, ”he wrote.
