They force him to get on a hot air balloon with his little daughter, which was made by the inmates of the jail. At first, it seems that his plan has succeeded, however, a rope gets caught in a barbed wire and the escape is thwarted.
The protagonist is again placed under arrest and, shortly after, is executed as planned. The film ends with a scene in which the daughter appears remembering her father, reuniting the inmates with whom she became friends. All of them go years later to a court to testify about his innocence, achieving that he was acquitted of a crime that he never committed and that cost him his life. Later, the daughter goes to cell number 7 of the prison and remembers the hot air balloon ride with nostalgia.
A historic success in South Korea
Despite Miracle in cell 7 is not based on a true story, he won the hearts of the whole country. This was reflected in the box office of the Asian powerhouse, since it managed to raise more than 30 million dollars within its borders during its first 2 weeks.
Just 52 days after hitting the big screen, it became the fifth-highest-grossing Korean film of all time. The film also won several major awards at the local and regional level. This meant that the story was taken up in other countries and by different studies to make adaptations.
