Verify your Microsoft account

To fix this issue, verify your Microsoft account and add security information if needed.

  • Login to your account.
  • Select Security.
  • Choose "Update Information". You may be asked to re-access your password or allow us to send you a security code to ensure only you make changes to your account.
  • After reviewing and updating the security information in your Microsoft account, try to sign in to Xbox Live again.
  • If you've added a phone number or email that hasn't been verified, you'll see a link to do it now.
  • If you don't have another email address or phone number, you must add at least one and follow the instructions. We suggest two methods of contact in case of change.

Note If you get a message that your Microsoft account has been suspended, follow the instructions to unlock your account.

As it turns out, the "Your account has been locked" error (0x80a40014) may also be due to a server crash outside of your control. After investigating the issue, we have determined that this issue has occurred multiple times in the past.

In each incident, Microsoft ultimately confirmed that the issue was due to a server crash that ultimately resulted in a large number of Microsoft accounts being locked out or automatically disabled due to false positives. Fortunately, Microsoft is quick to announce issues like this.
