Hillbilly, a rural elegy is a dramatic film directed by Ron Howard, which had its premiere on November 11th on a limited basis in some movie theaters. It is an original production of Netflix that arrived in the catalog on the 24th of the same month, landing with high expectations and even with aspirations of Oscar awards. JD Vance He is a former Marine from southern Ohio studying law at the prestigious Yale University. He is close to fulfilling his dream and getting the job he longed for, but a family crisis will change all his plans. You will be forced to return home, the place you have least wanted to return to.

He will not be able to escape the difficult relationship with his mother Bev, who is in a constant struggle to get out of addictions. He will be trapped in his reality, always keeping in mind the memories of his grandmother Mamaw, who settled in his memory as a figure of strength after significantly influencing his upbringing.

Cast of actors

The recent film by Ron Howard has as main actors Gabriel basso in the role of JD Vance, while Amy adams gives life to his mother Bev. In the same way Glenn close plays a central role in the movie as Mamaw. Let's not forget that the latter has been nominated 7 times to the Oscar awardsWhile Amy Adams is not far behind at 6. Criticism of Hillbilly, a rural elegy

Although the projections of joining Glenn Close Y Amy adams they were quite hopeful, the specialized press seems to have been disappointed. Although there are some positive reviews and praise the acting work, there are several negative reviews against a film that sought to consolidate itself as one of the most emotional of this end of the year.

Raquel Hernández Luján wrote the following for Hobby consoles:

“… Howard does not print any kind of lyricism to the narration from the aesthetic conception of the film, nor from the way the plot is exposed, so the entire central section seems repetitive and even boring with the constant reiteration of the behavior abusive of which JD is a victim (…) It is sustained thanks to the interpretations of Glenn Close and Amy Adams, both very physically transformed and defending two complex and decisive roles that are balanced ”, he specified.

For her part, Anna Menta thundered louder the new Netflix original production in her review of Decider:

“It's certainly upsetting to some when critics band together on a movie to be their annual punching bag, but Hillbilly, a country elegy makes it too easy. It's just a bad movie (…) It's bad in a boring way, falling asleep in the first 20 minutes (…) Howard's adaptation accumulates them [clichés] until even someone who has never seen a movie perceives the banality (…) The drama is over orchestrated ”, he pointed out.

Peter Bradshaw acknowledges Glenn Close's efforts and considers it one of the few positive aspects of the film in his critique of The Guardian:

“This is a well-intentioned story of someone who gets up on his own, with a little help from his grandmother. But she feels artificial and self-conscious (…) Mamaw [Close's character] is a very mature over-acting performance (…) I laughed at her acid attitude, ”she said.
