  • Start by registering with OWA.
  • Once you're logged in, click the Options button on the right.
  • A dropdown menu appears under Options.

  • In the Options section, click Settings in the left pane.
  • A list of icons appears. Click on the S/MIME icon.
  • The Email Security header appears with a paragraph of text. Click the Download S/MIME Control hyperlink link at the end of this text.
  • OWA will attempt to download the owasmime.msi file. Click the Run button.
  • The owasmime.msi file will be downloaded and installed automatically. When the window disappears, refresh your web page or click the Mail hyperlink.
  • When the page reloads, a yellow bar will appear at the top of your web page saying "This site wants to run the following plugin." Right click on this bar and a drop down menu will appear.
  • In this dropdown menu, click Run all websites in the plugin.
  • Internet Explorer opens a security warning window. Click the Run button.

Install the S/MIME check.

  1. If you haven't installed the S/MIME control and you receive a digitally signed or encrypted message, you'll be prompted to install the control when you open the message. If you have not installed the S/MIME control, you can also create a new message and choose additional options in the Advanced > Message Options menu and choose Encrypt this message (S/MIME). Afterwards you will be prompted to install the S/MIME command.
  2. When prompted to run or save the file, select Run.
