Like many people before committing to services or monthly fees, I carefully analyze the offer to make sure it will be a worthy investment. So in today's post I thought I'd give you an honest and realistic review of ManageWP.com. If you are considering it, keep reading!

What it is

For whom?

Well, you could argue that anyone with more than a couple of WordPress sites would benefit from ManageWP, but let me tell you about my situation and maybe feel empathy. As well as creating WordPress client sites, we simultaneously take care of hosting and ongoing maintenance of WordPress settings. When it came to a dozen sites, there was no problem, about twenty, well, okay ... when you got to about 40 sites, necessary to find another solution.

Reflecting on this, I think I waited too long to do anything. Login to so many sites and update a large number of plugins every month, check backups, maintain database, etc. I don't know how I did it for so long! But this is where ManageWP comes in.

Get your sites imported

Once you are up and running with your account, you need to add your sites to ManageWP.com, this involves two things:

  1. Entering the details in the ManageWP tool
  2. Installation of the «worker complement» in each of the sites

There is a CSV import option to list all the sites in the system, in fact I chose to do it one at a time. I was a bit new to that, but at the same time I wanted to take the time to classify the sites into groups. As an example, the entire site built in Genesis in one group, all the Thesis users in another, and all the random, well, a group for those at the same time.

the one at a time The interface is shown below.

Updating… Everything!

Well, this is the good thing. Once you've done all the hard work of setting up your sites, there is a payoff. Go back to the main management panel and you will be presented with a number of tools. The one I use the most is shown below.

Get update!

Now you can go crazy and click Everything in the various sections and I'm sure everything will work. I tend to be a bit more picky because I want to know what plugin is being updated, what's new in it, and most importantly, is it going to cause a problem for the XYZ site?

So you can open these options and see more details about exactly which plugins have updates.

managewp-changelog-5249303So you can read the change log (click the version number to see it), then when you are satisfied with what is happening, click update all next to a specific plugin and this will deploy the plugin to all the sites that have it.

The first time you do it, it brings you real satisfaction!

Direct access to WordPress dashboard

managewp-admin-2094290

This is definitely the number 2 feature that I love.

From the sidebar menu you have the option to "Open administrator here", it does exactly that.

Inside the ManageWP dashboard you are presented with the WordPress dashboard of the particular site, check a setting, edit a post whatever you need.

It's certainly better than manually logging into each individual site.

You want more, right?

Well there is so much more, let me give you a whirlwind tour of other features that I use regularly.

Backups are undoubtedly a key feature of ManageWP, but I'll be honest and say I haven't done it yet. Currently, using a combination of BackupBuddy and Vaultpress, moving backups to ManageWP has been placed in my basket "when I have some free time." I will get there because I am eager to see how it works.

Try it with the free trial

As always, it's nice to be able to get a free trial to play with a tool like this. ManageWP.com offers a 14-day free trial, from memory you can only load up to 5 sites during testing, but that's a lot to play with while you're testing things.

Good luck managing your WordPress sites! And feel free to post a comment here if you have a specific question about my experience with the service or if you want to add some ideas of your own.
