Most users report that they see this error when they have upgraded their PC from the old version of Windows to a new one. And when they try to view a JPEG image in the photos app, they get an error message saying "Invalid value for registry" instead of the image. Well, this happens because every time you update your PC or update your applications in Windows, the registry entries from the previous version may remain intact (technically they should be removed automatically). These older entries conflict with the system process and therefore you cannot view the photos.

Method 2: Fix the Error Itself in the Registry

1.Press Windows key + R and type "regedit" (without quotes) and then press enter to open Registry Editor.

2.Now navigate to the following location within the Registry Editor:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERN-SoftwareNClasesNLocalSettingsN-Microsoft Software.WindowsN-Current VersionN-Warehouse ModelN-Microsoft Families.Windows.Photos_8wekyb3d8bbwe

3. Next, expand the subkeys Microsoft.Windows.Photos_8wekyb3d8bbwe where you will find multiple entries for these keys that have a version number for the application in the name like Microsoft.Windows.Photos_17.214.10010.0_ etc.

4.You will now have a 50% of newer keys and a 50% of older keys, which basically means that the 50% is out of date and not erased for some reason. So now you have to delete these keys (the entries with the lower version number) that are causing this problem.

5.Well, you may not be able to delete the old keys because you have to take care of them.

To take ownership of the record go here and navigate to Manually Take Ownership of an Item.

To take ownership of the stale entries, right-click each entry, go to permissions, click advanced, change the system owner to yourself, press ok, and then assign the full rights of the key yourself. Now you should be able to delete it. (Check out this video for a more detailed explanation of how to take ownership of registry keys.)
