Web Ontologies

Concept of Web Ontologies

What are Web Ontologies?

Web Ontologies are encodings of concepts written in standardized language, to determine relationships between variables, solve problems and translate natural language into machine language, so that it can be processed by machines and can communicate through the network.

The Web Ontologies were created to remove ambiguity in the meaning of natural language words, in such a way that the machine can interpret the sense in which a word is used, to carry out the correct procedure.

What are Web Ontologies for?

The Web Ontologies they have a large number of apps, from the engineering and management of knowledge and information systems, to everything called artificial intelligence.

Some of the practical uses of this concept are:

  • Search by keywords: Filter the results to be consistent with the search intent.
  • Knowledge management or administration: In the procedure for capturing, extracting and storing information.
  • Debugging and filtering: Of large volumes of information, to discard the data that are not relevant, in such a way that the result serves for analysis and decision making.
  • Standardization and flexibility of vocabularies: To promote communication according to the context in which it is needed.

Some of the many disciplines in which this concept is used are:

  • Systems engineer.
  • Information architecture.
  • Semantic Web.
  • Bibliotechnology.
  • Biomedical Informatics
  • Software Engineering.

Examples of Web Ontologies

Web Ontologies allow machines to understand natural language, process data, and perform the operations for which they were designed.

They are used for a large number of apps that use human language processing, and are used, for example, for text translation, spelling and grammar checking, and in speech accreditation technologies.

They also serve to boost relevancy in search engines, multiple knowledge and information management systems, and much more.

An example that you can consult is BabelNet. It consists of a multilingual semantic network that collects information from the Internet to build a dictionary that is constantly updated.
