The WMPNetworkSvc service is connected to wmpnetwk.exe and is used to manage media sharing on a network. As an example, if you have multiple Windows devices on a home network, you can exchange a file or library between devices. You can also share media with Windows Phone and Xbox users so that any plug-and-play compatible device has access to central and shared media libraries.

However, this program does not need to start automatically, since you can run it on demand. It is recommended to disable this program so that it does not occupy the necessary resources.

Should it be disabled?

Restore the default startup settings for the Windows Media Player Network Sharing service.

Before you begin, make sure that all services that Windows Media Player's network sharing service depends on are configured by default and working properly. See the list of dependencies above.

  1. Run the command prompt as administrator.
  2. Copy the following command, paste it into the command window, and then press ENTER:
  3. sc config WMPNetworkSvc start = Query
  4. Close the command window and restart the computer.
  5. The WMPNetworkSvc service uses the wmpnetwk.exe file located in the % ProgramFiles% Windows Media Player folder. If the file is modified, corrupted, or deleted, you can restore its original version from the Windows 10 installation media.
