If a bookmark was used to create a cross-reference in the document and you see the error where the cross-reference should appear, then the bookmark referenced in the cross-reference field is no longer valid. This may be the case if the bookmark has been deleted or if the name of the bookmark has been entered incorrectly in the cross reference field. The only way to fix the problem is to clear the cross reference field or make sure the bookmark it references exists in the document.

If you receive this error when trying to use an automated table of contents (ToC), it is possible that one or more fields contain a broken link to a bookmark.

If the message “Error! Undefined bookmark ”immediately after generating the TOC and saving the document, you can immediately restore the original text by pressing the Ctrl + Z key combination.

You can also use the Cancel function from the Ribbon menu at the top of the screen. After canceling the action, fix any broken bookmark links before attempting to convert the document to a PDF file.

The TOC functionality in Word relies on the bookmarks you create for the different sections. If a bookmark can no longer be found, you will receive the message you see.

If your table of contents contains a lot of broken links and you're not ready to correct each entry, here's a quick fix for “Error! The “Undefined Bookmark” error is about converting the automated table of contents to static text. This will fix the error and you can remove the “Error! Undefined marker ”with your own text.

To convert OCT (table of contents) to absolutely static text, basically select OCT and press Ctrl + Shift + F9. Subsequently, all your TOC entries will be converted to static text, which you can edit as you wish.
