General information

Link checker is an important aspect of page optimization and should be done regularly by any webmaster. If there are many broken links, the search engine may believe that the site is not properly maintained, and this can adversely affect positioning. For a perfect crawl, it is an advantage that all incoming and outgoing links are maintained and not directed to a vacuum. Evaluations with many link checkers save you from having to do manual analysis and bad or dubious links, which can mean that a bad neighborhood can be located for a website.

Types

The task of link inspectors is to automatically find existing links and display them clearly. There are different types of link checkers that can perform the following functions:

  • Broken link checker.
  • Backlink checker.
  • Link checker for outbound and inbound links.
  • Link checker for plugins.
  • Anchor text search engine.

The backlinks can also be checked with the Google Search Console or the Google Bing Webmaster Tools. It is recommended always use multiple linkcheckers to check the links, since a tool alone does not always find all the links.

Link checkers in practice

Going through and listing all inbound internal links and backlinks with a link checker is only part of the job. This is usually insufficient, it needs to be analyzed in order to derive consequences for future action.

An important application of link checkers is the failure analysis. If a penalty has been imposed on a website and it has fallen in the rankings for a particular keyword, the link inspector can provide information about this penalty from Google. If the analysis tool shows that the link text of the incoming external links is based almost exclusively on a single money keyword, it can be assumed that the web has become a victim of the Panda update. A consequence of this analysis would be modify the relevant link text, remove the backlinks, or create many new links, which offer a more varied link text without the keyword money.

Link inspectors are equally necessary in the area of supervision. Has a collaborator removed a link? Are unnatural spam links going to my website? Are there new natural backlinks that could clear up a jump in ranking or a new source of traffic? These are questions that can only be answered by a link checker.

The link checkers can also be of help at the time of develop a keyword strategy. In this way, the targets of links within the site can be precisely identified and a structured linking scheme can be determined accordingly. One goal would be to use only one keyword for a web page and thus all links refer to a specific landing page with a single keyword.
