Mirror Domains

Mirror Domains

What are Mirror Domains?

Mirror Domains are a practice that is used quite frequently when naming a web address, a URL. Consists in different domains leading to the same IP address hosted on a server, since they are connected to it.

Even though it may sound strange, as we have already said, it consists of something that appears very frequently on the networks. Surely on more than one occasion you have written an address in your browser with an ending and it has taken you to the web, but with a different ending than the one you had written. This occurs because many firms buy several different extensions to protect their brand and prevent third parties from taking advantage of it.

This may seem like an unproblematic practice of any kind; But, for the owner of the web, having mirror domains can be a serious problem in terms of positioning, since having several pages with the same content, conflicts can be created in search engines that end up affecting SEO and preventing that the portal manages to climb correctly in positions.

A fairly widespread issue that requires action, but can be easily amended. Today, the best alternative to this tactic is to implement 301 redirects, something that avoids this duplication and that, for practical purposes and in the eyes of the user, does not make any difference.

What are Mirror Domains for?

Mirror Domains are used so that, in case of entering a different domain name and coinciding with any of these, take the principal to which they are connected. Companies use them, especially, to shield and protect the name of their website, acquiring those that have different endings such as .es, .com, .net or even .org.

A very useful measure in terms of protection but which, as we have already indicated, can cause certain inconveniences when positioning in the SERPs of internet search engines.

Mirror Domains Examples

To better illustrate what Mirror Domains are like, we are going to present a hypothetical case with the NeoAttack website. The main page of this agency is https://neoattack.com; and a viable example of a mirror domain could be https://neoattack.es or also https://neoattack.net. In case any of these last two addresses showed the same content as the first, we could talk about these mirror cases. However, it could also happen that 301 redirects had been used in order to perform an equivalent work, but without SEO problems.
