Florida algorithm

THE Florida algorithm refers to modifications or updates to Google's ranking algorithm, which came into effect at the end of November 2003. This update implemented certain filtering mechanisms for a number of keywords, resulting in a massive change in rankings of the websites in the Google ranking. The name Florida update is an unofficial name among experts, who usually name such updates after a hurricane.

General information

The goal of the Google search engine is to provide results with the best quality and the best match with the user's search request. This goal was formulated by Larry Page with the words "The perfect seeker ... would understand precisely what you want to say and return precisely what you want." This requires preparing the classification algorithm against spam attacks and manipulations. Since there were many problems with link spam and incorrect search results prior to the Florida update, Google planned extreme changes to its PageRank algorithm in 2003.

How does it work

SEO specialists tried to find out which innovations in Google's ranking algorithm resulted in drastic changes in website rankings. Listed below are some theories about the possible features of this update.

  • Search terms list

It has been suggested that Google uses an SEO filter for a specific list of search terms. In this way, if a word from this list is used, the SEO filter is activated, otherwise the search would avoid it. In this way, it can happen that the websites are eliminated from the ranking by the SEO filter or that they obtain a bad positioning.

  • LocalRank

The LocalRank is a method to modify the ranking, which is based on links from sites that have been selected for positioning. According to the theory, Google has added this method to the algorithm and therefore websites with quite a few intermediate links ranked in the top positions.

  • Stemming

This idea postulates that Google now orders words with the same root word in a search query (as if it were the trunk of a tree). This means that Google will automatically search for variations, which also contain the root of the requested word.

conclusion

It is still unknown how the algorithm was modified by the Florida update and there will always be new and interesting ideas, which will disprove or try to test old theories. Google's search engine will have to continue to evolve to ensure good results for its users.
