This error basically means that the command did not automatically find the boot configuration data store. The boot configuration utility target partition does not contain a Fat32 formatted EFI partition on the hard drive.
If you receive the following message when you run a command in bcedit.exe:
The boot configuration data store could not be opened
See which of the following will help you:
Run CMD as administrator and run the following command:
bcdedit / set {current} Description “TheNameYouWant”.
Go to a high CMD:
bcdedit / store c: Boot BCD
This gives you a list of options.
Perform the following steps:
bcdedit / store c: Boot BCD / set bootmenupolicy Legacy
Restart your computer, select your Windows, and hit F8 immediately.
Change startup mode
As some concerned users have already mentioned, when you boot the machine, you need to make sure to boot from the same partition that was used to create the disk, for BCDEdit to work as expected. The quickest way to do this is to change the BIOS mode. This is done through the BIOS settings, but varies from computer to computer depending on the motherboard manufacturer and the version of BIOS it contains.
Reinstall the system
If all the above methods don't work on your computer, you have no choice but to reinstall Windows 10 as a final solution. While reinstalling Windows can be problematic, it can help.
Regardless, if you reinstall your operating system, the files on your system drive may be erased and all your applications must be reinstalled. Therefore, we suggest that you backup your files before reinstalling your system.
BCD fixing
All of the previously described problems have in common that you can no longer boot into Windows. Therefore, you cannot use tools like Visual BCD Editor to fix the problem on the computer in question because it can no longer boot into Windows.
Generally, you need to boot into the advanced startup (Windows 10 or 8.1) or system recovery (Windows 7) alternatives and run various commands from the command line.
If you have support for Windows installation, you can boot from it and enter the recovery alternatives.
