Check the network connection

The errors are usually caused by slow internet speed or unstable network connection. We suggest using a reference broadband identical (or higher), with a minimum download speed of 128KB/s.
You can check the speed of your Internet connection with the speed test.

regular maintenance

To ensure the reliable operation of your telephone system, it is recommended that scheduled maintenance be performed in one form or another. Below is a routine that can easily be done on a monthly basis. Is not difficult. Basically turn off the entire system and reboot it.

The following refers to an older version of the Magic Jack that needs to be plugged into a USB port on your computer. If you have a Magic Jack Plus or Magic Jack Go that uses a wireless Internet connection, please ignore the instructions below that apply to your computer. If you are having difficulty connecting to the Internet, be sure to test the ability to access it using another device that uses your wireless connection.

  • If your phone requires a power source, unplug the power cord.
  • Remove the Magic Jack and set it aside.
  • If your Magic Jack was connected through a power hub, disconnect the hub from the power source.
  • Disconnect and turn off your computer.
  • Disconnect the computer from the power source.
  • If you are using a router, unplug it from the power source.
  • Disconnect the modem (the device that connects the system to the Internet) from the power source.
  • Count slowly to ten. Then reconnect the modem to the power source. Let the device stabilize in a few minutes. At this time, the modem should not have any red lights. A red light indicates problems with the modem, with the line from the modem to the jack, or with the Internet connection.
  • If your system uses a router, reconnect it to a power source. Let the router stabilize for a minute.
  • Connect the computer. Turn on your computer and sign in. Wait five minutes until the computer is fully charged.
  • If you are using a power hub with a Magic Jack, connect it to a power source.
  • If you are using a phone that needs power, reconnect it to the power source. Make sure your phone is connected to the Magic Jack using the phone cord.
  • Conecte el Magic Jack al sistema. Deje tiempo para descargar el software.
  • Check the handset to make sure you have received the dial tone.

This may surprise you, but many electronic equipment problems can be basically corrected by temporarily turning off the power. By following the process outlined above, you can prevent small undetected glitches from becoming serious problems.

Disabling or removing the firewall

Si utiliza una combinación problemática de enrutador / módem junto con un firewall de terceros, existe la oportunidad de que esté tratando con un paquete de protección excesiva que eventualmente comprometerá la funcionalidad de Magic Jack.

This issue will only occur with inauthentic firewall suites like Comodo, McAfee, and Avira. We couldn't find any custom reports that this issue is caused by Windows Firewall.

Remember that if you are using an old style firewall, the same security rules apply even if you close/open the real-time security application. Therefore, the only way to establish if your firewall is truly creating a hindrance is to uninstall them all together before jumping to any conclusions.

Create a static IP and define it as DMZ

If none of the above solutions work for you, you are probably using a router that is afraid of VoIP services like Magic Jack. Some users who have encountered this issue on Q1000 models and similar devices have reported that they were able to resolve it by installing a static IP on their computer and then setting this static IP as DMZ in the router settings.

DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) is a host on the internal network where all UDP and TCP ports are open and unprotected, precisely what Magic Jack devices need to function properly.

cable replacement

  • If restarting the device does not resolve the issue and you have confirmed that you have a stable internet connection that meets the minimum speed requirements, we suggest you replace the cables that match your:
  • ethernet cable
  • Telephone cable
  • Power adapter (if available)

Firmware update

If all the above troubleshooting steps fail, you should update to the latest firmware version. Click here for more information.
