Those using Google's Chrome web browser may have noticed that when you visit certain pages, a small double diamond icon appears in the address bar next to the star icon allowing you to add a bookmark. When you mouse over this icon, a message will appear saying “This page wants to install a service manager. What does that mean precisely?
With Chrome, web services can ask if they want to use them to open certain links. Even though most links regularly take you to another page, some links can open programs and perform other actions. As an example, mailto: Links can open your mail program and Webcal: Links can add events to your calendar program. These links are called registers, and the programs they use are called controllers. Many web services, including Gmail and Google Calendar, can now be used as administrators.
When you click on the double diamond icon, a small box appears where you can choose between three settings: Use, No, and Ignore. By default, the ignore option is set. There is also a link to "Manage controller configuration". This takes you to the Chrome Settings page in the Privacy section and shows all active protocol managers. It is up to you to choose whether or not to use this service manager.
Enable or disable site administrator requests in Chrome
If you want to allow Gmail to open all email links,
- Select the Use Gmail radio button. When you click a hyperlinked email address on a page, the Create Gmail window opens.
- Choose No to store how your computer opens email links as before.
- Choose Ignore to prevent the request from appearing again when you visit Gmail.
You can also use Google Calendar. Its options are similar to those of Gmail, except that you can use Google Calendar to open links to Webcal. Service managers in Chrome are enabled by default. You can disable or reactivate them from Chrome's Settings menu. This is how we do it.
- Select the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
- Choose configuration
- Show advanced settings.
- In the Privacy section, click Content Settings.
- In the dialog box that appears, you will find the "Driver" section:
- To allow requests, select "Ask sites to become default records managers."
- To disable inquiries, select "No web portal authorized to process records."
- If for some reason you want to use a different administrator to open a link on a page, right-click on the link and select "Open link with" to choose an administrator. Your default settings for the administrator are not affected.
- To delete the manager, move the mouse over the manager you want to delete.
- Click Clear this page.
CONCLUSION
The links that can be used to open a particular application are called protocols and the application to be used is called an administrator. Thus, the message indicates that the application must be configured to function as administrator when the link is clicked. The link opens automatically in the application, instead of in the browser.
