Several users asked us questions after receiving the 'ATKEX_cmd.exe has stopped working' error multiple times. For some users, this sounds like it happens every time they start up, while others report that the problem only occurs when they try to run a resource-intensive application, like playing a game or making a video. In most cases, the problem is reported for versions of Windows prior to Windows 10. atkexcomsvc.exe runs from below as a service in Windows (asComSvc). This service operates under the SYSTEM account with extended privileges on the local computer and acts as a computer on the network.
Reinstall correct Realtek audio driver
Reinstall the correct Realtek drivers from the motherboard/motherbox vendor's web portal. The new drivers should wipe out the older Realtek versions, but you should make sure it's fully disabled. Also disable Realtek from starting on Windows Start at:
- Task Manager
- commissioning
- Right-click on Realtek + Disable before reinstalling.
Installing the Intel Management Engine Driver
It seems that this particular problem can also occur due to a remaining Intel Management Engine driver that has been uninstalled incorrectly. This is generally reported on ASUS computers. Several concerned users reported that after installing the latest version of IME (Intel Management Engine) and restarting the computer, the error “ATKEX_cmd.exe has stopped working” occurred.
This fix is reported primarily for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Here is a quick guide to make sure you have the latest version of the Intel Management Engine driver installed:
- Download the latest version of IME (Intel Management Engine) by clicking Install and configure.
- In the Drivers and Downloads section, click Intel Management Engine Drivers for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
- On the next screen, click the Download button at the top left of the screen.
- Once the download is complete, unzip the zip file, then click the executable setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Intel Management installation
- Engine Controller (IME).
- Restart your computer and verify that the issue is resolved after the next boot.
Uninstall Realtek Audio Drivers
Even though the Realtek HD Audio Driver is technically software on your computer, you can't uninstall it using “Programs and Features” in Control Panel as you would for other programs. Instead, you should use Device Manager. This program manages all the different drivers installed on your computer, including the one that runs your Realtek HD audio device.
Step 1 – Click Start.
Step 2 – Click Control Panel.
Step 3: Click on “System”.
Step 4: Click on “Device Manager”.
Step 5: Right-click on the Realtek HD icon and click Uninstall to uninstall this specific audio driver from your computer.
